History
The Plaid Door is a consignment and resale shop that was established in 1953. It is located behind St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Dallas and staffed entirely by volunteers.
The store officially opened in 1953 in vacated Quonset huts, selling gently worn children’s clothing, religious items, and gift wrapping. James Avery placed his jewelry in the store. The present building was purchased in 1974. Merchandise has expanded to include gently worn (although some items are brand new) women’s and men’s clothing, jewelry, linens, household goods, gifts (new items), and small furniture items.
Policies:
We take donations any time we are open (Tuesday through Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.). We take consignments from 9:30 to 11:30 the second Wednesday, the second Saturday, and the last Saturday of the month. That only changes if a holiday falls on those days. The items are on consignment for 60 days. After that, the items not sold may be picked up; otherwise they become store property and are marked down. All clothing must be clean, pressed, in season, and in style.
Conditions of Sale:
- NO refunds or exchanges
- Cash or Check ONLY
- $25.00 charge for each returned check
- Approvals* must be returned by noon the next day
*Approvals are treated as a regular sale (i.e. cash or check), but are held until the following day.
The money made in the store goes to a quarterly gift to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, church and school projects, and to outreach. We help such organizations as North Dallas Shared Ministries, Brighter Tomorrows, Hope Cottage, Homeless Veterans Ministries, Friends of the Military, and needy families. Clothing that we do not sell goes to Gladewater Baptist Church, North Dallas Shared Ministries, and Homeless Veteran’s Ministry. Nothing is wasted.
